Leverkusen, February 16, 2018 – The Bayer people who volunteer time and effort to support community projects really are role models. After all, their volunteering is making a difference to people, society and the environment in numerous countries around the world. In 2017, Bayer Cares Foundation received 330 applications from 58 countries and the 113 winners chosen will be receiving EUR 402,151 to support their projects. This is the highest annual sum awarded since Bayer Cares Foundation began supporting volunteering work in 2007. Since then the Role Model Program has had a powerful societal impact, with more than EUR 2.6 million spent to support 745 projects in over 70 countries.
20 projects in Eastern Europe
Bayer Cares Foundation awarded a total of EUR 94,962 to 20 community projects from seven countries of Eastern Europe: the Russian Federation, the Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, the Republic of Moldavia, Romania, Turkey and the Ukraine. One of the winning projects from the Russian Federation was “Dolphin and Wonder”, where a colleague from Bayer’s Kazan is involved in running dolphin therapy sessions for children with severe mental disorders and their families. Another project known as “Dobrodusha” (KindSoul) is all about implementing new technologies for the socio-psychological rehabilitation and education of orphans and children in difficulty.
“In these award-winning projects we are mainly supporting employees whose engagement and innovative ideas are helping to solve social challenges,” says Dr. Hartmut Klusik, the Bayer Board of Management member responsible for HR and sustainability who also chairs the Bayer Cares Foundation Executive Committee. “Through their projects they are bringing new impulses for better living conditions and acting as important ambassadors in conveying our leitmotif as a responsible innovation company.”
The worldwide impact of Bayer’s Role Model Program is documented by the broad geographical spread of the award-winning projects. Besides the seven Eastern Europe countries listed above, projects in the following countries were given financial support:
• Western Europe: France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Sweden and Switzerland
• North and South America: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, USA and Venzuela
• Middle East: Israel and Jordan
• Africa: Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, Morocco and South Africa
• Asia: China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam
• Oceania: New Zealand
